love of writing

Why do I write? I think about this question over and over and over again.  I think about it when I sit for so long at my computer typing/deleting/retyping a story that my back feels like cardboard meets lead pipe.  I think about it when I’m awoken at 2am because a character or opening scene pops into my head uninvited.  I think about it when I get a “nice pass” (as my agent calls it) from an editor.  So why? What has kept me at my keyboard typing, revising, story boarding, outlining all this time?

Honestly, the only answer I can give is that I just love writing and no matter how long it takes to get my stories off 8 ½ x 11 white computer paper, I write because I can’t not. (Yes, I know that’s a double negative!)  I write because I love the way the unraveling of the story makes me feel.  I love how I get to know each character’s flaws, secrets and dreams. (I recognize this is a very Hallmark-eye-roll-sentiment, but it’s true!)  I love the way I feel when I’m writing something that connects me with others.  Simply, writing is a part of the fabric of me. And, while I hope my journey to my ISBN number winds its way there soon, I know that no matter what you’ll always be able to find me at my desk sitting at my computer writing.

  1. I’m right there with you, Elly! Especially on this line:
“I love the way the unraveling of the story makes me feel.”
Or how about when you make unexpected connections within your story or from your story to the world? I’m dazed and amazed for hours.
    Thanks for this lovely post!
